Scottish Conservative and Unionist candidate for Midlothian South, Tweeddale and Lauderdale, Shona Haslam, has strongly praised the UK Government for helping jobseekers in Midlothian to start up their own businesses.

Councillor Haslam, who is her party’s candidate for Midlothian South, Tweeddale and Lauderdale in May’s Scottish Parliament election has highlighted new figures showing that over 200 individuals have been supported by the UK Government through the New Enterprise Allowance Scheme.

Over the last decade, 230 individuals received the funding and support needed from the UK Government to start up a new business in Midlothian after being an unemployment benefit claimant.

Shona Haslam says this is another example of the UK Government providing vital support to promote jobs and livelihoods and can be used as a way of rebuilding communities in Midlothian following the Covid pandemic.

Commenting, Scottish Conservative candidate Shona Haslam said:

“It is fantastic to see that the UK Government have helped over 200 jobseekers in Midlothian alone to set up their own businesses.

“Through funding support and guidance, the UK Government have ensured people have been able to set up their own businesses and generate investment in the local economy.

“While times have undoubtedly been hard over the last year, this shows a way where we can help rebuild our communities in Midlothian after the Covid pandemic.

“It is hugely welcome to see entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in Midlothian and I am fully committed to supporting jobs and livelihoods in the area.”
