A Scottish Borders councillor has thrown her hat into the ring to be selected as the SNP’s candidate at the next Holyrood election.

Councillor Fay Sinclair, who represents the Galashiels & District ward, is hoping to be on the ballot paper for the Midlothian South, Tweeddale and Lauderdale constituency.

Christine Grahame, who has served as an MSP for 25 years, announced last month that she would retire at the next election, earmarked for May 2026.

Councillor Sinclair, commenting on ‘X’, says: “Over the past few weeks and months, local members have been asking if I’d consider putting myself forward for the next Holyrood election.

“With a timetable now in place for candidate selection, and Christine Grahame MSP announcing she will stand down in 2026, I am excited to answer that call.

“I would offer a fresh voice for parliament, with energy, drive and passion backed by a decade of experience as an elected member in local government.

“I know from discussions with members across Central Borders, Tweeddale and Midlothian that the key to the party’s success lies with the grassroots and I will ensure we continue building the connections needed to come together and win in 2026.”

The SNP’s Calum Kerr, who was previously the MP for Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk between 2015 and 2017, has also announced his intention to fight for the nomination.

The next Holyrood election is due to take place in 20 months, however, First Minister John Swinney has not ruled out a snap election if the Scottish Budget does not pass parliament.
