The company that was behind the failed film studio development near to Straiton have now lodged plans with Midlothian Council for a site next to the Dalkeith Schools Campus.

The plans have been produced by Architects Keppie Design of Glasgow on behalf of Edinburgh Caledonia Studios Limited and Buccleuch Estates Limited.

The Proposal is for a mixed use development comprising a Film and TV Studios including Workshops/Offices, Reception/Commissary, Gatehouse, Trailer Park, Film Academy and associated Student Accommodation. All with associated access, parking, infrastructure and landscape buffer.

A drop-in session event will be held at Woodburn Primary School on 31st January 2019, between 4pm – 8pm.

Details of the proposals will be presented on public display boards, comments forms will be available to complete and members of the Project Team will be on hand to answer any queries. Comments on the proposals will be requested by 14th February 2019, to allow a further two weeks for comment.

The Straiton bid ultimately failed due to the Tenant Farmer rights over the land. However, the site at Salter’s Park is likely to be viewed more favourably by Midlothian council as it is in/near to an area already designated for commercial use.

With good road links to the site from the A68 Northern Dalkeith Bypass then the studio should not create the traffic issues that other developments in Midlothian have caused.

It should be a welcome jobs boost to Midlothian as well as provide a boost to the town of Dalkeith.

With the schools of Dalkeith High, St David’s High and Saltersgate all next door to the proposed site there should be ample scope for educational partnerships as well.
