Proposed new pump and BMX track

Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Marie Sharp

A BMX track will be built around the outside of a pump track at a new floodlit facility in the middle of park land in Musselburgh.

Plans for the new sports tracks have been lodged with East Lothian planners for the first time with the design aimed at allowing all ages and abilities to use it.

The pump track will be 70 metres in length and at least two metres wide with bumps and raised banks of varying heights while the 90 metre long BMX track will feature an elevated start platform and be able to be used by riders separately or by merging into the pump track.

A report on the new facility, which is being applied for by the council which has been working with Musselburgh Monarchs BMX Club, says it will be built in park land off Haddington Road next to Musselburgh East Community Learning Centre.

It says a public consultation over the plans three years ago found “overwhelming support” for the facility in the town adding it follows the “overwhelming success” of a similar site in the village of Ormiston.

The new site will be one of six pump tracks East Lothian Council is intending to put in place across the county.

The report says the project will create “unique, safe, fun and inclusive
wheeled sports facilities for all users regardless of age or gender”.

It adds: “The project will also meet the needs of under represented groups who have very few age appropriate facilities suitable for their recreational use and community social activity in the local area.

“It will therefore benefit all local residents, encourage cycling, reduce antisocial behaviour and encourage healthy outdoor sporting activities.”

The plans have been published on the council’s planning portal for consideration.
