Colin Beattie MSP, Midlothian North & Musselburgh, writes his monthly column for Midlothian View
The school pupils of Midlothian North have now returned to the classroom. To all our pupils, parents, and teachers across Midlothian, I want to extend my very best wishes as you prepare to step back into the classroom.
For our young learners, the beginning of a school year is an opportunity to start afresh, to build on the past year, and recapture their love for learning. Whether you’re just beginning your educational journey in primary school, transitioning to secondary or preparing for the challenges of your final years, this time of year brings excitement, and perhaps a little nervousness too. And that’s perfectly okay.
Although the return to school is eagerly anticipated by some, for many parents and children, it is a time of adjustment. The logistics of where we must be and when are challenging and it can be a period of anxiety for both pupils and parents. In addition, there is a financial burden of purchasing school supplies, uniforms, lunches, and other essentials, particularly for those with multiple children.
The Scottish Government is committed to alleviating this financial strain for parents and want to ensure our children have the best start in life. With it’s limited devolved powers the Scottish Government have introduced the following initiatives.
Universal free school meals for children in primary 1 to 5. This policy ensures children have a nutritious meal, developing healthy eating habits, and improves their concentration in the classroom. No child should go to school hungry.
The Scottish Child payment helps eligible parents manage the additional expenses that come with raising children, including those related to education.
Free bus travel for young people in Scotland who are under 22. This helps primary and secondary pupils and higher education students save hundreds of pounds per year and helps reduce the reliance on travelling by car.
Free early learning and childcare for three and four-year-olds and some eligible 2-year-olds, helping families manage their working life.
I hope this column alleviates parents worries about the costs associated with the new school year.
This new school year is a fresh start for everyone. Let’s make it a year of learning growth and success. Good luck to every one of you.
