Inside the Freemason Grand Lodge of Scotland on Edinburgh
Written by Midlothian View Reporter, Luke Jackson
The Grand Lodge of Scotland, the historic governing body of Scottish Freemasonry since 1736, have released its 2025 Annual Report, showcasing a vision to strengthen community ties and expand its media presence.
Based in Edinburgh’s Freemasons Hall (located at 96 George Street) the Grand Lodge of Scotland is the premier Masonic authority in Scotland, working in 32 provinces across the country – as well as 26 international districts across the globe.
Their annual report details their vision for the future of Scottish Freemasonry across all our jurisdictions.
They have expressed that they are committed to upholding the values of Freemasonry. They also intend on carrying on our public support for local and national charities. Their members host regular fundraisers for numerous causes across the country.
In 2026 and beyond, the Grand Lodge aims to become a more active presence within society and across online platforms. They have also received positive engagement across their online accounts across last year.
The Grand Lodge is also aiming to challenge misconceptions about Freemasonry through transparent, modern outreach.
Grand Secretary William Semple praised charity efforts, and emphasised the changes in the report he sought to oversee:
“The Grand Lodge of Scotland proudly stands alongside our charitable partners, who include Prostate Scotland, The National Literacy Trust, Combat Stress and The Armed Forces Covenant. Through collective action and shared values, we continue to make a meaningful difference, honouring our traditions while building a better future for all.
“Social media has become an essential means in sharing the story of Scottish Freemasonry with a wider audience. It allows us to celebrate our heritage, highlight charitable work, and engage with members and the public in real time.
“By embracing social media, we are fostering transparency, accessibility, and a renewed sense of community, ensuring the values of Freemasonry continue to resonate in today’s connected world.”
The development of their New and Young Masons initiative marks a step in nurturing the future of Scottish Freemasonry. The launch of the Apprentice Pillars network and the clear definition of a young Mason under 45 or within seven years of membership are helping the Freemasons build spaces where younger members can connect.
“To our existing members, you will also need to do your own personal bit to ensure that Freemasonry is a welcoming society. Your actions towards our newer, especially young members, will determine if Freemasonry will thrive in the future.”
On top of the annual report, they have also announced that Alexander Moncrieff is set to become the new Grand Master Mason of Scotland. He will be installed into the position on November 27th 2025 at a ceremony at Freemasons Hall, 96 George Street, Edinburgh.
