Mouse on the nature trail

Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Paul Kelly

Borderers are being given a unique opportunity to get up close and personal to mice and voles this weekend.

As part of Selkirk’s Nature Network project, GW Ecology will be running a small mammal workshop on Selkirk Hill.

Small mammals such as mice and voles play a vital role in the ecosystem, forming an important part of the food web for raptors and larger mammals, as well as contributing to soil health and seed dispersal.

The workshop is free to attend and will cover how to identify different species and best practice for surveying.

It will also be a rare opportunity to see these animals up close and discover just how many species live on the hill.

The event is being held from 10am on Saturday, March 28, for a hands-on introduction to small mammal identification and survey techniques on Selkirk Hill.

Graeme Wilson and Steph Bartlett, from GW Ecology, will guide attendees through the basics of surveying for small mammals in the field.

Live traps will be set out overnight, allowing those participating to see some of the species that live on the site.

Graeme is an experienced ecologist and wildlife educator with over 20 years of experience surveying mammals, making this a great opportunity to learn from an expert.

Steph has worked alongside Graeme as an ecologist for the past two years, specialising in birds and mammals.

This workshop is perfect for beginners, nature enthusiasts, and anyone considering a career in ecology or conservation.

Attendees should meet in the car park at the Argus Centre and walk up to Selkirk Hill via the Pot Loch.

Children attending must be accompanied by an adult and all attendees are asked to wear sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing.

Dogs are not permitted on this workshop.
