Scottish Borders Council has approved plans for a new all-year-round pump track on an historical playing field in Eyemouth after its impact on a nearby town cemetery was “softened”.
The track with floodlighting will connect to an existing path network on land west of Eyemouth Primary School in Coldingham Road.
A pump track is designed for all things on wheels, from BMX and mountain bikes to skateboards, scooters, and roller skates.
Its flowing design lets riders generate speed by pumping (pushing down) on the back side of the rollers rather than pedalling.
The agreed pump track has been designed by Velosolutions UK (AVUK) to maximise the site within the budget.
The 145m pump track and 45m jump line will offer progression for all abilities, from beginners to advanced riders, with an engaging asymmetric layout that encourages creativity and sustained use.
In his report approving the application, SBC planning officer Paul Duncan, said: “Overall, it is considered that the impact of the development would affect the character of the site and its surroundings.
“This would be experienced by receptors including those visiting the cemetery and walking through the fields/dog walkers. Particular consideration has been given to the impact of cemetery visitors, which was visited as part of the site visit for the application.
“However, the development would be considered in keeping with the character of facilities you would expect to see within a park or playing field setting.
“To soften the appearance of the works and assimilate the development into its setting, it would be appropriate for the lighting columns and outer side of the ‘curved wall’ feature to be painted green.
“There will also be a condition requiring turfing and wildflower seeding to achieve biodiversity enhancement.”
A report with the internal SBC application stated: “The Eyemouth facility combines durable construction, high-quality ride experience, and sensitive landscape integration to create a lasting community asset that promotes outdoor activity and inclusivity.
“Floodlighting significantly extends the usability of a pump track, particularly during the shorter daylight hours of winter and in more northerly locations, enabling safe and enjoyable use throughout the year.
“Our lighting schemes can be programmed with flexible operating times to suit local needs and are carefully designed to minimise light spill and disturbance to nearby residents and wildlife, including bats.”
