Midlothian South, Tweeddale and Lauderdale MSP, Christine Grahame, has welcomed new partnership working between Scotrail, Visit Scotland, South of Scotland Destination Alliance and a range of visitor attractions accessible from the Borders Railway.

Ms Grahame suggested and convened a meeting between the parties in June to discuss how the railway could be better utilised to drive visitor numbers in Midlothian and the Borders.

Following that positive meeting Scotrail, with the support of Visit Scotland and South of Scotland Destination Alliance, has teamed up with 5 visitor attractions – Arniston House, the National Mining Museum, the Great Tapestry of Scotland, Trimontium Museum and Abbotsford House – to offer free kids admission for anyone showing a rail ticket.

Combined with Scotrail’s existing “Kids For Quid” offer, which allows up to four children to travel for just £1 return each with an adult, it is hoped this will offer great value days out for families wanting to explore more of what Midlothian and the Borders have to offer.

SNP MSP Ms Grahame said:
“I’ve long thought there was a place for closer promotion between the railway and attractions, so was pleased at how positive the meeting I convened was with everyone keen to collaborate.

“I am delighted to see promotions around this now launched and I hope it will see good uptake.

“There are fantastic attractions and days out across Midlothian and the Borders, and by tapping into the railway with great value deals I hope we can encourage more people to come and see what’s on offer.

“I believe there is much more untapped potential in the area for tourism so I will be continuing to look at how this might be expanded to drive footfall and, in turn, visitor spending in the area.”
