Midlothian Council is inviting residents to take part in a short survey to help shape a new welcome hub planned for the ground floor of its headquarters, Midlothian House.
The hub – which will include Dalkeith Library and Arts Centre alongside a range of council customer services – is due to open in 2027 once refurbishment work to Midlothian House is complete. The new space aims to make it easier and more convenient for people to access the services they need, all in one place.
Residents will be asked for their views on proposals such as extended opening hours, regular housing and revenues drop-ins, quiet study areas, a booking system for check-ins, and self-service consoles offering access to information including Council Tax support.
The move is part of the council’s wider plans to reduce the size of its estate while improving the quality and energy efficiency of its buildings. Services currently located in Dalkeith will be brought into Midlothian House, where significant work is being carried out to repair the façade, extend the building’s lifespan and improve sustainability.
Dalkeith Library and Fairfield House will be disposed of or redeveloped as part of ongoing regeneration plans for Dalkeith town centre.
Council Leader Councillor Kelly Parry said:
“This is an exciting opportunity to design a modern, welcoming and sustainable space that brings key services together in the heart of Dalkeith. We want to make sure the new hub truly reflects what people need, so I’d really encourage everyone to take just a few minutes to fill in the survey. Your feedback will help us create a high‑quality environment that works for our communities now and for years to come.”
The council explained that the cost of the refurbishment is largely offset by savings achieved through closing other council buildings and increasing the energy efficiency of Midlothian House.
The building is currently closed, with staff relocated to other sites during the works. Staff areas within Midlothian House will remain unchanged.
