Hibs vs Midtjylland at Easter Road
Written by Midlothian View Reporter, Katie Gregory
The Danish visitors kicked off the action at Easter Road, but it was Hibs who set the tone. Hibs dominated possession in the opening moments, and took no time at all to settle into the match.
Within the first five minutes, Hibs created their first real chance when Chris Cadden’s cross picked out Martin Boyle in front of the goal. Midtjylland defender Han-beom Lee was ready for this, however, and blocked the shot with ease.
Midtjylland began to find their feet in the match, and fired a warning shot as Franculino Dju rose highest in the box to win a cross from the left, but couldn’t direct his header into the goal.
In the 15th minute, Hibs were on the counter-attack and thought they had found their moment of magic when Jordan Obita crossed the ball excellently to Kieron Bowie, who tapped it in expertly. Easter Road erupted, but the joyous reaction of the crowd was cut short following a VAR review which classed the goal as offside.
As the first half continued, Midtjylland grew in confidence and quickly capitalised on any mistakes from the home side. In the 37th minute, a gap appeared in the Hibs right, and Simsir raced through this space and looked set for goal. That was until O’Hora slid in at the last moment, stopping his shot from testing Jordan Smith.
As the first half drew to a close, Hibs began to show signs of nervousness in possession, while Midtjylland looked increasingly threatening. With the score level and everything still to play for, the second half promised to be a true test of mental strength.
Both sides felt the occasion as the second half began, with quick changes of posession and frantic passes. Once Midtjylland were on the attack again, Franculino Dju found a gap in the Hibs defence and raced clear to slot a shot past Smith clinically.
However, VAR ruled the goal out for offside – and we were back level once again at Easter Road. The mood lifted after this decision, and boosted by the surge in confidence, Martin Boyle found Chris Cadden charging into the box again, but his right-foot strike was saved well.
It was Midtjylland substitute Victor Bak Jensen who went close next, but lost his balance in front of the goal.
As Midtjylland increased the pressure, Hibs started to tire across the pitch – giving the visitors plenty more chances at goal. For some fresh energy, David Gray substituted on Elie Youan and Nicky Cadden.
In time added on Boyle raced through and squared a lovely shot Nicky Cadden, who slotted it in with ease. However, there were no celebrations as it was quickly ruled out for offside.
In the 94th minute, Darío Osorio sent a stunning shot from 25 yards out, hurtling past Jordan Smith and silencing Easter Road completely.
Down but not out, it didn’t take Hibs long to respond. Hoilett sent a lovely ball to Youan, who stormed into the Midtjylland box with all the confidence in the world. Youan squared the ball to Rocky, who finished clinically from close range.
Easter Road erupted once again, the crowd electric and fully behind their team. The atmosphere lifted Hibs, fuelling their confidence as the game hung finely in the balance.
Hibs had a late opportunity on the counter-attack with Klidje finding Hoilett in space, but the winger couldn’t get his shot on target.
Midtjylland had shown quality throughout the evening, but it was in the dying moments of extra time that they produced a moment of excellence to outshine everything else.
Brazilian striker Júnior Brumado shattered Hibs’ hopes with a stunning overhead bicycle kick, a goal worthy of winning any match.
The Hibernian side may feel their immense efforts went unrewarded, but they can take pride in a performance full of heart, resilience, and belief. In the end, they were undone not by lack of effort, but by a moment of excellence from Midtjylland who rose to the occasion when it mattered most.
