A home help service based in Kelso is helping to keep a range of people in the town safe, a new report has deemed.
A representative of the Care Inspectorate recently paid an unanounced visit to Nightingales Home Help Services Ltd, which is based at the town’s Horsemarket.
The service provides support to older adults, people with dementia, mental health problems and physical disabilities within their own community.
At the time of inspection 50 people were being supported.
It was found that the service had effective safeguarding arrangements in place.
Policies and procedures were comprehensive and clearly defined roles, responsibilities and processes for identifying and responding to harm.
The service demonstrated strong and effective incident management.
Recording systems were clear, detailed and supported timely reporting and follow-up. Sampled incidents showed appropriate and prompt responses, including escalation to relevant professionals and agencies when required.
The report states: “Staff demonstrated a strong understanding of safeguarding and engaged appropriately with external agencies when required.
“One person told us, ‘I feel well looked after and safe’. This meant people experienced care and support that promoted their safety, well-being and protected them from harm.
“Recruitment practices were robust and fully aligned with safer recruitment guidance.
“Sampled staff files demonstrated that all required pre-employment checks, including PVG, references and Right to Work verification, had been completed prior to start dates
“Care planning was of a high standard and clearly person-centred. Plans were comprehensive, well structured and regularly reviewed, incorporating people’s needs, preferences, routines and desired outcomes.”
