Former Butcher's Shop
Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Paul Kelly
A hot food takeaway could be on the menu in a Berwickshire town after a butcher’s shop suffered the chop.
An application has been submitted to Scottish Borders Council for the change of use of 22 West High Street in Greenlaw.
The shop ceased trading in early 2025 and has been vacant ever since.
The main building adjoins the Blackadder Mini Market to the east, which is a two-storey building comprising of a small supermarket on the ground floor with a flat above.
A report with the application states: “The applicant has considerable experience in running successful takeaway premises in the Borders and will bring this expertise to the Greenlaw establishment.
“There would be no adverse effect on the building’s appearance within Conservation Area.
“While it is acknowledged that there would be an element of on-street parking generated by the development, it is considered that this would be no worse than that generated by the former butcher’s shop.
“The application would retain the use of the building as a commercial premises, appropriate to the diverse uses in a village main street and helping to maintain the vitality of the centre of Greenlaw.
“The fabric of the existing building will remain unchanged apart from the introduction of an extract ventilation system to serve the front shop area, which will require an external wall louvre in the north elevation and two external door louvres in the west elevation of the existing rear extension.”
It is intended that the business would operate between the hours of 11am to 10.30pm and provide employment for a minimum of three people.
