Peebles Nursing Home
Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Paul Kelly
Improvements are needed at a Borders care home after little “meaningful engagement” with the people living there was highlighted.
Three representatives of the Care Inspectorate paid an unannounced visit to Peebles Nursing Home at Tweed Green between November 18 and 19.
It was found that whilst staff were kind and respectful in carrying out tasks, at inspection there was not enough personal interaction with the people supported.
Medication systems were in place, but insufficient audit oversight increased the risk of errors.
There was a lack of overview of staff practice. Staff did not always receive regular supervision, with little opportunity to evaluate staff’s competency or learning and development needs.
Staffing levels were sufficient to meet the needs of people supported. However, deployment of staff across the home was variable.
It was found that the manager and staff had continued to review the quality of care and support plans since the last inspection.
The service received four ratings of ‘adequate’ and one of good. The report states: “During visit observations, staff consistently treated individuals with kindness and respect while carrying out care tasks.
“However, interactions were largely limited to task-oriented activities, with little evidence of meaningful engagement beyond the completion of routine duties.
“This suggested a lack of understanding and application of the ethos of person-centred care, where the focus should have extended beyond physical needs to include emotional, social, and psychological well-being.
“The absence of such engagement represented missed opportunities to promote individuality, choice, and holistic support, meaning people’s needs were not fully realised.”
The service operator, Mansfield Care Limited, has been approached for comment.
Responding to a report earlier this year, a spokesperson for Mansfield Care Limited said: “Significant investments have already been made, and we remain committed to enhancing both care and environment.
“We are pleased to see an improvement in our grades from previous inspections and are focused on building on this progress to deliver the highest quality of care for our residents.”
