Hibs v Hearts yesterday
Written by Midlothian View Reporter, Ewan Hornell
When he opened the scoring after just seven minutes, Martin Boyle may have been dreaming of a fairytale goodbye to the Edinburgh Derby. But two red cards brought his Hibs side back to reality, as they ultimately fell to defeat in his final appearance in the fixture.
Boyle was not emotional over it being his last Edinburgh derby, but rather hurt over the loss.
“It is painful because we got beat, it’s a derby. It doesn’t really matter that it is my last derby. The club goes on and it’s not about me.
“Personally scoring a goal is a nice feeling but losing the game is ultimately not ideal.”
It was a familiar story from the week prior, as ill-discipline once again cost Hibs.
“The discipline the last few weeks has been unacceptable and its cost us. Boys have to take responsibility.”
Boyle admitted the squads lack of discipline is something that needs to be addressed.
“It has to be, it has let us down in two massive games that we needed results in.”
Despite the setbacks, the opportunity they offer is some small consolation.
“It gives an opportunity for someone else to come in and keep the jersey.”
Even when reduced to nine-men, Hibs were spirited in their defence of their early lead.
“Collectively we were together, you could see that, everyone was pitting their bodies on the line.
“It’s obviously hard being down to nine-men. They are putting bodies forward and we can’t pick up everyone. But I thought defending crosses and saving shots we were brilliant.
“We tried our best, we stuck together and I thought the boys did really well.”
The defeat was compounded by Motherwell’s late winner against Rangers, leaving Hibs six points adrift in the race for European qualification.
“We are going to have to try and win all the remaining games.”
We have to pick ourselves backbup and go again next week.
“We have to be confident that we can get results, we know how difficult Celtic are but we have to have belief that we can go and win the game.”
Boyle has been with Hibs on and off since 2014 and in that time has seen many iterations of Hearts but none quite like this one.
“You’ve just got to take you hats off to them they are doing really well. They’ve been consistent thought the whole season and deserve everything they are getting at the moment.”
