After an early injury to Miguel Chaiwa, 19-year-old Kai Andrews was thrust straight into action to make his Hibs debut, just days after arriving on loan from Coventry City.

It was hardly the introduction Andrews would have expected, but on one of Scottish football’s biggest stages he embraced the moment, looking composed and dangerous throughout his time on the pitch.

‘I mean coming on so early into the game I wasn’t really expecting it,’ Andrews said.

‘But once I settled into the game it was a brilliant experience to go and play in front of the fans against such a good opposition. So yeah it was dream debut for me really.’

Despite creating several promising opportunities, Hibs were unable to find a breakthrough, though Andrews felt the performance merited more than a point.

‘We had a lot of good chances. It was definitely a game we could have gotten more out of but we’re happy with the point and the performance.’

The move to Easter Road came together quickly following conversations with Hibs head coach David Gray and Coventry manager Frank Lampard.

‘I spoke to the gaffer about a week ago, so it came around pretty fast,’ he explained.

‘I headed up here the middle of the this week and I mean its Rangers for the first game as well, it’s a bit of a whirlwind for me.’

Andrews’ decision to return north was influenced by his previous experience in Scotland, having spent last season on loan at Motherwell, where he made 12 appearances during a challenging period for the club.

‘I mean when I had a chat with the gaffer and the gaffer at Coventry, a big think for me with this move was, one the club and the experience I’ve already got in Scotland I thought it was the right move for me to go and build on.

‘I started off really well at Motherwell, I had a bit of a rocky period of time once the manager left and I was struggling to find minutes but again I had a lot of opportunities. The rangers I played in last year led to me getting my first international call up. I felt it was a really good chance for me
to come up here again.’

With opportunities at table topping Coventry limited this season, making regular minutes the key factor behind his move to Hibs.

‘I’ve been struggling to find minutes at Coventry and that’s the biggest reason why I came up here, to get those minutes and that chance to develop as a player,’ Andrews added.

‘I played in a lot of cup games, made a few features in the league but consistent minutes is what I have needed.’

He arrives at an exciting time, with Hibs facing a run of significant fixtures as they push for a European place.

‘Theres a lot of big games coming up. Obviously we’ve got the derby coming up, so that’s a game I’m really looking forward to. Alot of big games that I can get the opportunity to play in and so I’m hoping I just give myself the best chance to be in the squad for those games.’

Earlier this season, Andrews made his senior international debut for Wales, coming off the bench in a friendly against Canada. With World Cup qualification on the line and a play-off against Bosnia ahead, he hopes regular football at club level can help put him back in contention.

‘The biggest thing is just having a platform to play and express myself and have the eyes of the national team looking at me, so if I can keep putting in good performances I can definitely push myself into that squad.’
