Wee Mantle community pub
Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Paul Kelly
A new community pub in a Borders village will be a “great asset” to the community, councillors have agreed.
Last year a public consultation was launched in Broughton over the future use of the temporary community shop attached to the village hall in Main Street.
The space had become available to rent within the community hall after the much-loved village shop moved back to newly renovated premises.
Earlier this year an application to SBC to convert the vacant space into a community-owned and operated village pub was rubber-stamped.
Now members of the council’s Licensing Board have endorsed an application for a premises licence to enable the sale of alcohol at the Wee Mantle pub.
Councillor Eric Small, who represents Tweeddale West as a Conservative, said: “This is actually within my ward and I can remember the hotel that was in Broughton, The Green Mantle, and it was well used and I think this pub will be a great asset to the community.”
