Colin Beattie MSP has welcomed the news that a new application for a pharmacy in Rosewell, focused on dispensing of prescriptions and a Pharmacy First service, that will greatly serve the Rosewell Community has been submitted.

However, the news has been met with real concern from the Midlothian North and Musselburgh MSP due to a previous pharmacy application being rejected by the Pharmacy Practices Committee (PPC) appeal process.

Mr Beattie is concerned that the archaic system used in both the application process and the subsequent appeals process may again show its flaws and result in a failure to gain approval.

Commenting, Midlothian North and Musselburgh MSP Colin Beattie said:

“I am pleased to see the consultation for a new pharmacy in Rosewell is underway, and I would encourage everyone who would like this proposal to become reality completes the consultation before the Thursday 28th November 2024 closing date.

“The consultation can be found online at https://app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.uk/s/nhslothiansurveys/pharmacy-public-consultation-newcraighall-duplicate or you can request a paper copy by contacting: Primary Care Contractors Organisation, NHS Lothian, 2nd Floor, Waverly Gate, 2-4 Waterloo Place, Edinburgh, EH1 3EG, via telephone at 0131 537 8427 or email at CommunityPharmacy.contract@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk.

“I remain concerned over the current confrontational process pharmacy applications are subjected to.

“I have raised concerns on the appeals process to Scottish Government Ministers and the PCC appeals committee previously, citing the undemocratic process through the involvement and influence of other pharmacies in the assessment process.

“The current system needs urgently addressed to reflect the current needs of our communities – not the financial needs of large pharmaceutical companies.

“I will work with colleagues in the Scottish Parliament and I will be making representations to the Scottish Government again to see how real change can be made to this outdated unfair legacy system which appears to pre-date devolution.”
