Christine Grahame, MSP for Midlothian South, Tweeddale and Lauderdale constituency, has raised concerns about the rapidly growing population of Midlothian in Parliament.
SNP MSP Ms Grahame asked if special consideration could be given for funding to Midlothian due to this and the pressure it could put on local facilities and infrastructure.
According to the most recent census, in 2022, Midlothian’s population had increased by 16 per cent since 2011, which is five times higher than the Scottish average.
Ms Grahame said:
“Midlothian is of course a fantastic place to live for a whole range of reasons, so I can understand why developers are building here and people are choosing to move here.
“However, the population growth of Midlothian has been explosive in recent years. You only have to look at the thousands of new houses built in the past decade to see evidence of that.
“It is essential that this growth is properly managed, taking into account the impact on schools, GPs, roads and so on.
“I do believe there’s an argument for Midlothian being looked at as a special case and I’ll continue to pursue this with my councillor colleagues.”
