One of the main road routes south from Edinburgh will be closed for two months from the end of February.

The A70, road running out from Balerno and skirting the Pentland Hills through the rural south of West Lothian is undergoing resurfacing at one of its highest points.

The road, known as the Lang Whang, will close from Monday 23 February. It is the main A-road from Edinburgh leading to Ayr and south-west Scotland via Carnwath and Lanark.

The stretch of road from Berry Knowe to Ainville Farm (Auchinoon to Halfway House) will be closed from the junction with the B7031 Kirknewton road in the east, to the junction with the B7008 road from Harburn/West Calder in the west, with a signposted diversion will be in place via the above roads and the A71 running through West Calder and southern Livingston.

A spokesperson for West Lothian Council confirmed works are programmed to take eight weeks, weather and resources permitting, with an additional four weeks in case they are required in case of inclement weather or unforeseen site constraints.

The closure is required to allow extensive roadway reconstruction work to be safely carried out. Installation of several road safety measures will also take place within the closure, including high friction surfacing, traffic signs, hazard marker posts, reflective road studs and lining. The road, particularly as it approaches Harperrigg reservoir, has tight hairpin bends.

Harperrigg is popular with open water swimmers from West Lothian and the capital.

Local residents and businesses within the closure section will still have access via the east or western approaches to the closure which will change as the works progress.

Users are encouraged to plan their journey in advance taking due account of the proposed roadworks.

If any businesses or residents require a copy of the working programme, this can be requested here.
