Melville Road, Dalkeith, which is currently closed following an incident at the weekend will reopen to cyclists and pedestrians in the next few days while repairs are carried out on Elginhaugh Bridge.
Midlothian council’s roads team anticipate the road will be closed to vehicles for up to four weeks. A diversion will remain in place via the A6094/A7/B6392 for the duration of the works.
During the incident at the weekend the parapet of the bridge was struck and ended up in the river.
This week, two cranes will start retrieving the stone work from the river bed and from on and around the Scottish Water pipe bridge. This will allow Scottish Water the chance to assess damage and consider appropriate repairs.
Scaffolding will then be put in place to allow for the bridge parapet to be rebuilt.
