Members of a burgeoning political party aiming to “fix the foundations of Scottish society” gathered in Duns for a pre-election get-together.

The national leader of the Scottish Family Party (SFP), Richard Lucas, who founded it back in 2017, was in attendance at a meeting of the Borders branch at Southfield Community Centre last Friday.

The SFP is a socially conservative, anti-abortion, pro-marriage party that advocates for parental rights in the education system and opposes transgender self-identification and gender recognition reforms.

The party has fielded candidates in Scottish Parliament, local, and UK general elections.

The meeting, attended by local party members, supporters, and prospective supporters, was part of a series of events taking place across Scotland ahead of the Scottish Parliament elections on May 7.

Participants at Friday’s meeting included local farmers, a teacher, a young nurse, a retired community link worker, professional engineers and directors of local small businesses, as well as one young man contemplating his career options.

“Each had something of value to contribute by sharing their personal or professional insights and concerns,” said SFP Borders branch chairman Hamish Goldie-Scot, who added: “On May 7th, every voter in Scotland will have the opportunity to cast their second (“List”) vote for the Scottish Family Party.

“We believe that we not only have the policies needed to help fix the foundations of Scottish society, but high calibre candidates capable of working constructively with others to achieve this.

“This entails a move away from policies based on ideology, to those based on what is known to work, including a sensitive recognition of the central importance of marriage, families and care for the most vulnerable in our communities.

“Over the coming months, across Scotland, we will be seeking to engage in respectful informed public debate, particularly about key areas where the Scottish Family Party has a unique policy position.

“For many of these issues, the larger parties will not take a clear stance, for fear of dividing their support base. So they retreat into portraying the issues as being merely a matter of personal conscience or preference.

“By bringing these issues into the realm of public policy, and encouraging respectful informed debate about difficult issues, the Family Party will – uniquely – be giving voters an opportunity on May 7th to vote in line with their conscience.”

“The issues we will focus on form part of a coherent road map towards a better and more hopeful and united future.”
