Children from Mayfield Primary School in Dalkeith are helping to launch a national NHS 24 health campaign, as families across Scotland are encouraged to plan ahead for the Easter holidays.

NHS 24 has unveiled the spring phase of its Powered by People campaign, with photography featuring local pupils Anya (5), Orla (10) and Finn (8), bringing a distinctly Midlothian feel to a Scotland‑wide health message. The campaign highlights NHS inform as the first place people should look if they have questions or concerns about their health.

The national campaign focuses on helping families feel confident about managing common health concerns during the Easter and Spring public holiday period, when GP and pharmacy opening hours may change. Public holidays are traditionally a busy time for NHS 24’s 111 service, yet many everyday issues, such as coughs and colds, stomach bugs, rashes, minor injuries and medication queries, can be answered safely online.

NHS inform provides NHS‑approved health information, symptom checkers and advice on local services, helping people decide what to do next without needing to phone 111. All advice is regularly reviewed and updated by experienced NHS staff, ensuring it is safe, consistent, and reliable.

Dr Ron Cook, NHS 24’s Medical Director, said:

“When GP practices are closed, NHS inform should be people’s first stop if they have health concerns. Much of the advice usually given via 111 for common conditions can be accessed online instantly. By checking trusted sites such as NHS inform first, people can quickly access information and reassurance for minor concerns, while also keeping our phone lines open for staff to assist those who need urgent care or support most.”

Families in Midlothian are also being encouraged to prepare for the spring period by keeping basic medicines and first aid supplies at home, and by checking they have enough prescription medication to cover the Easter weekend and spring public holidays.

By supporting people to self-care where appropriate and guiding them to the right services, NHS 24 helps ensure urgent care remains available for those who need it most.
