Community groups and project leaders are being given the chance to apply for a grant towards mental health initiatives in Midlothian.

The Midlothian Community Sports Hub is offering micro grants of up to £500 to support initiatives which use sport and physical activity to help people with their mental health and well-being.

The new funding comes as the council says the number of people living in Scotland who self-report a long-term mental health condition has more than doubled from 2011 to 2022.

Community sports clubs, voluntary and community groups, charities, social enterprises and partnerships organisations are all welcome to apply for the funding with a deadline of March 16.

Projects which will be consider must include either sports or physical activity with a mental health focus, taster sessions or pilot activities, funds to support coaching, volunteer training, venue hire or equipment and inclusive activities for under represented groups.

Examples of the type of projects which could benefit from the grants are sporting memories social groups for elderly aimed at tackling social isolation; mental health awareness training for coaches and volunteers to support your club members or ‘Play & stay’ sports/physical activity sessions featuring social elements aimed at sparking light-touch mental health conversations.

Anyone who wants to find out more about the grants and how to apply can go to www.midlothian.gov.uk/info/521/sport_and_leisure/880/community_sports_hubs/2.
