The Midlothian group of dancers set to compete in Spain this summer

Written by Midlothian View Reporter, Liam Eunson

A group of talented young dancers from Midlothian have qualified to represent Scotland at a major international competition taking place in Spain this summer.

The dancers, aged between 10 and 14, train with Southside School of Dance, which operates locally across Bonnyrigg and Dalkeith, and secured their place at the Global Dance Open Finals following strong performances at regional qualifying events.

The prestigious competition will see them perform against top young dancers from across the world when it takes place in July 2026.

Principal Louise Herriot said the achievement is a proud moment for both the dancers and the local community.

She said: “We are incredibly proud of the team. To qualify for an international event of this standard is a huge achievement, and to be representing Scotland makes it even more special.

“It’s an amazing opportunity for the dancers to perform on a global stage, gain experience, and continue developing their skills alongside some of the best young talent in the world.”

The Global Dance Open is recognised internationally for bringing together elite dancers, offering performance opportunities as well as workshops led by industry professionals.

In a bid to help cover the costs of travel, accommodation and competition fees, parents have launched a fundraising campaign to support the team.

Louise added: “We are committed to making opportunities like this accessible, but the costs can be significant. Any support from the local community would make a real difference to these dancers.”

The school is also appealing to local businesses in Bonnyrigg, Dalkeith and the wider Midlothian area who may be interested in sponsorship opportunities.

Southside School of Dance, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, provides high-quality training in a supportive and nurturing environment for dancers of all ages across the local area.
