The LO-GY Centre in Loanhead
Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Marie Sharp
A Midlothian gym has converted storage space into a takeaway, beauty parlour and outside parcel pick up point.
The LO-GY Centre, in Loanhead, has applied for retrospective planning permission for the new ventures which are based in former store rooms at the gym building.
In an application to Midlothian Council, the gym owners say the new businesses are already in place and they were unaware they needed permission to make the changes.
They add: “The applicant has been dealing with the council regarding food safety, funding etc and it was never mentioned.”
The application for a partial change of use of the building from gymnastics facilities to a cafe and hot food takeaway , beauty salon and installation of external parcel lockers also includes new CCTV covering the business area at the side of the building.
The two main gym halls in the building remain in place along with staff facilities and changing areas.
The centre was established over 40 years ago by the committee of the then established Loanhead and District Gymnastics Club and hosts sessions for East of Scotland Gymnastics Academy.
Run by volunteers it provides afternoon and evening classes for members with pre school sessions also run in the mornings.
A separate charity organisation Jumping Jacks runs out of the hall at weekends hosting childrens parties.
It is based in the former East Church, on Polton Road, which opened in the 1850s as a Free Church of Scotland kirk.
The application has been lodged with Midlothian Council planning portal for viewing.
