Rosslyn Chapel
Written by Midlothian View Reporter, Liam Eunson
Two Midlothian landmarks are set to feature in a new television series about some of the country’s architectural gems – Kevin McCloud’s Listed Britain.
Kevin McCloud, known for his engaging style and passion for architecture, will guide audiences through the history and significance of these preserved structures. Across five episodes, he will travel the length and breadth of the country to uncover the stories behind some of Britain’s most remarkable buildings and structures, exploring why places have been judged worthy of the highest level of protection. Two of Midlothian’s most historic sites – Rosslyn Chapel and Mavisbank House, which are both Category-A Listed buildings – will be featured in the series, which started on More4 on Wednesday 13 May.
Rosslyn Chapel was founded in 1446 by Sir William St Clair and practically every stone surface inside and outside this unique building is carved in an outstanding display of craftsmanship. Mavisbank was built from 1723-7. It was designed by architect William Adam, and his client, Sir John Clerk of nearby Penicuik, to fulfil his vision of a classical villa for civilised retreat to the countryside.
Kevin McCloud said: “Our built world reflects who we are; as individuals, families, neighbourhoods and as a nation. We tacitly expect it to even tell us who we are. So which bits of history – both ancient and recent – do we find useful? Which bits do we keep, cherish and fight to see saved? Is it our country houses built by the aristocracy, our cooling towers that speak of our recent industrial past or the old corner shop we use every week. And who gets to choose? It’s been a huge and fascinating pleasure to make this series. And to ask all these questions. I’ve loved it.”
Mavisbank House will feature in episode 3 and Rosslyn Chapel in episode 5, along with Brighton Royal Pavillion and the Sir John Soane’s Museum. Kevin McCloud’s Listed Britain has been commissioned for More4 and produced by Plum Pictures.
