David Sharp returns to Professional Darts Corporation ProTour action this week as he competes in Players Championship 7 & 8 at the Mattioli Arena, Leicester.
Sharp heads into the events in excellent form after producing an outstanding run to the quarter-finals at Players Championship 6. A major milestone in his debut season on the professional circuit, as well as a boost in valuable ranking prize money.
The professional darts player from Midlothian impressed throughout the day with a series of high-quality performances against established names on the tour.
His run began with a strong 6–3 victory over Welsh player Rob Owen, averaging 94 in a composed opening performance.
He then delivered one of the standout results of his career so far with a dominant 6–0 win over two-time World Champion Peter Wright. This game was streamed on PDCTV for everyone to see.
David continued his impressive form with a 6–3 victory over Beau Greaves, widely regarded as the leading player in the women’s game and now establishing herself as a genuine contender on the PDC ProTour, before producing arguably his best performance of the run.
A superb 6–2 win over Alan Soutar saw “Razor” Sharp average over 100, sealing the match in style by taking out double 19 twice. This shows both his confidence and finishing ability under pressure.
His run eventually came to an end in the quarter-finals, where he fell 6–3 to Thibault Tricole, but his performances across the day underlined his growing presence on the ProTour.
“That run gives me a lot of belief,” Sharp said. “To beat players of that level and perform like that shows where my game is at, but I know there’s still more to come.”
Sharp also arrives in Leicester determined to respond positively following his recent appearance at the UK Open Darts Championship, where he narrowly exited in a dramatic round 1 game against Adam Leek.
After falling 5–2 behind, he showed real character and composure on the big stage to battle back to 5–5, before eventually being edged out 6–5 in a match that could have gone either way.
“It was a tough one to take,” he reflected. “To get it back to 5–5 from 5–2 down showed the fight is there, but I just couldn’t get over the line.”
Players Championship events feature 128 players in a straight knockout format, with no room for error. Sharp could once again face some of the sport’s biggest names from the outset, including Luke Littler, Michael van Gerwen, Luke Humphries, Gerwyn Price or Gary Anderson.
With momentum building and valuable experience gained, he travels to Leicester aiming to turn strong performances into another deep run.
“I’m learning every time I step up there,” he said. “The experience from the UK Open and the last ProTours will stand me in good stead. Now it’s about pushing on.”
Alongside his ProTour campaign, Sharp is also targeting qualification for upcoming European Tour events, including the European Darts Grand Prix (ET5) in Sindelfingen from April 17–19 and the Austrian Darts Open (ET6) from May 8–10.
Securing a place in either event would mark another major step forward in his debut season, offering valuable ranking prize money and further experience on the European stage. He so narrowly missed out in both finals in the last round of Euro Tour qualifiers.
Sharp was also keen to thank those who continue to support him throughout his journey.
“The support I’ve had has been incredible. The messages and comments I get honestly blow me away — it means a lot knowing so many people are following my journey.”
“I’d also like to thank Midlothian View for their continued coverage, Michael and Emma at The Ship Inn in Dalkeith for their ongoing support, Unicorn Darts for producing a brilliant first prototype dart, and my management team at Dunvegan for everything they do behind the scenes.”
