More than 200 pieces of footage have been shared with Police Scotland since CCTV cameras were installed in seven Borders towns a few weeks ago, it has emerged.

Scottish Borders Council introduced the cameras in Duns, Eyemouth, Galashiels, Hawick, Kelso, Melrose, and Peebles.

In addition to its role in crime prevention and detection, the new state-of-the-art CCTV system supports council services by providing insight on footfall, traffic, and movement across the towns.

The system can also be used to assess conditions during severe weather events.

Early indications are that the cameras are proving a success since being introduced in September.

Councillor Robin Tatler, SBC’s executive member for Public Safety and Resilience, speaking at a meeting of the council’s Executive Committee, said: “The CCTV has only been in place for a short period of time but even in that short space of time 243 pieces of footage have been requested and given to Police Scotland.

“So even in a very short space of time that it has been live it has been hugely important as an investigation tool.”
