MSP warns against boiler cold calling scam

Friday November 20th 2015

Local MSP Colin Beattie warns against a cold calling scam where constituents are told they need to have their boiler replaced due to Scottish Government legislation. Mr Beattie confirmed there are no such requirements in place, and instead advised anyone seeking heating help to call the Scottish Government’s Home Energy Scotland advice service on 0808 808 2282. This service does not cold call and provides advice on grants, loans and support on how to keep homes warm and save money.

Mr Beattie further noted that anyone concerned about nuisance calls should contact the ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office) which is responsible for the regulation of unsolicited live calls, recorded calls and texts and can take action against companies. The ICO helpline number is 0303 123 1113.

Mr Beattie said:

‘Home Energy Scotland should be the first port of call for anyone seeking help heating their home. It can be tremendously difficult to heat our homes during the winter months, and their advice line can make a real difference.

‘Anyone who cold calls on the false pretext that boilers need to be changed is lying, simply put, and I find it shameful – but not surprising – that these sorts of people come out of the woodwork at this time of year.

‘That’s why I urge any of my constituents who receive such a phone call to notify the Information Commissioner’s Office. Please do not be bullied into something that has no basis in truth.’
