National recognition was on the menu last week for a dedicated kitchen team with a Kelso-based care provider.

QME Care is celebrating after being bestowed with accolades at the prestigious Great British Care Awards National Finals, held in Birmingham on Friday.

Operating from Queen’s House, Murray House and Evanthea House the service, established in 1954, offer 59 ground-floor, en-suite rooms.

At Friday’s bash, hosted by television presenter Ben Shephard and care sector commentator Steve Walls, the organisation’s head chef, Adam Russell, and the QME Care kitchen team were crowned winners of the Care Home Chef Award, following their earlier regional success in Glasgow late last year.

The award was recognition for the team’s dedication in ensuring they meet the highest dietary standards for the people they care for.

At the regional awards in November, QME Care received five finalist nominations and brought home three awards for Barbara Bertram, Adam Russell and Kelly Brown, company CEO.

The team was also recognised as finalists for Team of the Year and Employer of the Year.

Following their regional wins, Barbara Bertram and Adam Russell progressed to represent the Scottish Borders at the national finals in Birmingham.

On the night, it was Adam and his kitchen team who emerged as national winners.

Judges praised the team, stating: “Adam and his team consistently exemplify outstanding teamwork, a deep passion for their roles, and genuine care for residents.

“They are dedicated to innovation, meticulous attention to detail, and the safe, thoughtful preparation of modified and special diets, ensuring every resident receives the highest standard of nutrition and care.”

This national accolade recognises not only culinary excellence, but the compassion, dignity and person-centred approach that underpins every aspect of life at QME Care.

The kitchen team’s dedication to innovation, specialist dietary requirements and high nutritional standards plays a vital role in supporting residents’ health, well-being and quality of life.

Barbara Bertram was also recognised on the national stage as a finalist for the Workforce Development Award, highlighting QME Care’s ongoing commitment to staff development and excellence in care delivery.

Kelly Brown, CEO, said: “We’re so proud of our amazing team. Their hard work and compassion truly make QME Care special.

“To receive this level of recognition at both regional and national level is a tremendous achievement for our organisation and for the Scottish Borders.”

QME Care has extended its thanks to its entire team for their continued dedication, professionalism and commitment to delivering outstanding care every day, and to the Great British Care Awards for the outstanding recognition.
