Plans for up to 50 new affordable homes on the edge of Penicuik have been lodged by Midlothian Council.
The local authority wants to build on land south of Silurian Road, next to new residential estates on land set aside for housing.
The proposals which are on the council’s planning portal, include 29 houses and 17 flats and are described as an extension to the existing residential area, completing the wider development.
The plans say: “The development comprises a total of 46 homes, including a mix of flats and houses with two to four bedrooms.
“The mix has been informed by local needs and will address identified gaps in affordable housing provision. All homes will be affordable properties for Midlothian Council.
“The range of house types and sizes will support a diverse mix of residents, contributing to the growth and enhancement of the wider community. This mix also offers a degree of adaptability to the development.”
The homes are designed to be net zero carbon as well as being designed to Housing for Varying Needs (HfVN) standards, ensuring that general accessibility and usability requirements are achieved across the development.
And the design statement reveals security has also been taken into account for the new housing adding:
“The safety and well-being of future residents has been a key consideration in the design.
“This is achieved through the careful positioning of buildings to provide natural surveillance and positive overlooking of streets and public spaces, supported by high-quality street lighting.
“These measures help to create a safe and attractive environment, encouraging active use of both public and private spaces.”
The plans are on the council’s portal for viewing.
