A bid for a new bus service in a Borders village which divided opinion among residents and led to “aggressive behaviour” on social media has fallen short.

A number of people in Cardrona want a bus stop at the Village Hall, particularly those at the far end of the village who face long walks to catch the X62.

Among those in support of the bid are residents without a car who have to carry shopping home, those who have young families who feel nervous when making the trek home after dark from Nashy’s bus stop, and those who simply could use the service instead of a car to visit Peebles.

A petition was launched which garnered support from 145 villagers.

But the request raised the hackles of other residents, members of Scottish Borders Council’s Scrutiny & Petitions Committee were informed.

Those villagers were unhappy at the prospect of buses making their way through the centre of the quiet village.

One of the petitioners explained: “The people who were making the most noise were on Cardrona Way, the route that comes right through the village.

“There a number of people that were quite critical and made their points well known on Facebook, sometimes quite aggressively towards us. We suffered quite a lot of aggressive behaviour during this process.”

Committee members were informed that Borders Buses, which operates the X62, was not in a position to make changes to the route at this time.

But petitioners were told that the refusal decision was not the end of the process and that discussions to find a solution would continue.

Speaking after the meeting, Lee Young, operations manager at Borders Buses, said: “It’s our job to respond to the demand for bus services in the area we operate, and we would happily meet with members of the Cardrona community to discuss possible future travel opportunities.”
