Written by Midlothian View Reporter, Liam Eunson
The charity, Substances Support Scotland has been chosen to lead vital support services for adults affected by alcohol and drug use in Midlothian and East Lothian.
Substances Support Scotland, which has been operating since 1977, has been awarded a one‑year contract by the co-ordinating body, Midlothian and East Lothian Drugs and Alcohol Partnership (MELDAP), beginning 1 April 2026.
The appointment comes after existing provider MELD announced in January 2026, it would stop services on 31 March 2026.
Substances Support Scotland will offer a wide range of support for people aged 18 and over, including clear information about treatment options, early help, emotional and practical support, harm‑reduction advice, community-based support and peer‑led recovery activities. The aim is to help people stay safe, improve their wellbeing, and build stronger, healthier lives.
The existing direct telephone line, 07843 339 958 known as the “Contact Service” will continue to operate, providing a first point of contact for drugs, alcohol and substance use related service enquiries.
Chair of MELDAP Nick Clater said: “We’re delighted to have secured the services and expertise of Substances Support Scotland, which has just short of five decades of experience in this field.
“Many thanks again to MELD for its 30 years of support. Our focus now is ensuring a smooth transition to that everyone who needs help continues to receive it.”
