The newly-appointed chief executive of a Borders-based conservation charity is to take up her role today, January 5.
Borders Forest Trust (BFT) has announced the appointment of Laura Alcock-Ferguson.
Laura is currently BFT’s development manager, having joined the Trust in May 2025, and brings extensive leadership experience from across the environmental and charitable sectors.
Her appointment follows a rigorous and highly competitive recruitment process, designed to secure the strongest possible leadership for the Trust’s next phase.
Jedburgh-based BFT is dedicated to restoring native woodlands and wild places in the Southern Uplands.
Working since 1996, it engages volunteers, landowners, and communities to create a tapestry of native habitats across areas like Talla, Carrifran, and Corehead, enriching local ecosystems and combating climate impact
Laura’s previous leadership roles include chief executive of the Ancient Tree Forum and executive director of the Campaign to End Loneliness. She was awarded an MBE in 2021, in recognition of her work tackling loneliness.
She is an alumna of the University of Edinburgh, and holds an MBA from The Open University.
Laura said: “I am honoured to be stepping into the role of chief executive at Borders Forest Trust. BFT’s work to restore landscapes and reconnect people with nature is deeply important, both locally and nationally. I am excited to work alongside the team, our volunteers, members and partners to build on what has already been achieved and to help shape the Trust’s next chapter.”
Laura will lead BFT’s next phase of work, advancing the Trust’s vision for landscape scale restoration and meaningful community engagement across Southern Scotland.
While BFT’s core mission remains unchanged, Laura’s leadership will strengthen the Trust’s ability to deliver ambitious projects, grow partnerships and secure long term support for its vital work.
Borders Forest Trust has extended its sincere thanks to Andrew Campbell, who has once again guided the Trust through a period of transition as interim director.
A Trust spokesperson said: “His calm, steady leadership has been greatly valued, and he will support a smooth handover ahead of Laura taking up the role.”
The Trust also acknowledges the contribution of Charles Dundas, who stepped down after nearly six years as director. Charles steered BFT through the Covid years and the acquisition of Ericstane.
“We thank him for his commitment and wish him well,” the spokesperson added.
