Five new touchscreen information points offering confidential, up-to-date advice on cost of living support are now available in libraries across Midlothian.

The digital information points – known as VERA (Virtual, Expert, Remote Advice) – aim to make it easier for residents to find trusted guidance on benefits, debt and other essential support services.

VERA connects people with help from organisations including Midlothian Council, the Scottish Welfare Fund, Women’s Aid, VOCAL and Dalkeith Citizens Advice Bureau.

With the installation of these new units, the VERA network has expanded to seven sites across Midlothian.

Residents can now access VERA at:

– Danderhall Library
– Gorebridge Library
– Lasswade Library
– Loanhead Library
– Mayfield and Easthouses Development Trust Pantry
– Penicuik Library
– Woodburn Community Hub

The new touchscreens were designed by Dalkeith Citizens Advice Bureau and funded by Midlothian Council’s Cost of Living Task Force. The VERA unit at Gorebridge Library was funded by NHS Lothian Charity.

Councillor Kely Parry, Midlothian Council Leader and Chair of the Cost of Living Taskforce, said:

“Expanding the Citizens Advice VERA network into our libraries will make it even easier for residents to find the support they need.

“These simple, user-friendly touchscreens connect people quickly with expert advice on benefits and debt. Our friendly library teams are also on hand to help anyone who may feel uncertain about using digital technology.

“We know many households continue to feel the pressures of the cost of living crisis. Increasing the number of VERA units is an important part of our ongoing response, alongside a wider package of support.

“This year the Cost of Living Taskforce has also funded the Midlothian Pantry Network, contributed funding to local food pantries, income maximisation services, four warm and wellcoming hubs, and the continuation of the Trusted Partner model, which helps residents access urgent financial support quickly.”

Julie Podet, Dalkeith Citizens Advice Bureau Manager, said:

“Dalkeith CAB believe it is vital to support residents where they are. VERA units are placed in accessible community hubs, reducing the need for travel and ensuring more people can receive timely support.

“The introduction of VERA underscores a commitment to improving access to advice and ensuring no one is left without support. The service is particularly valuable for those who may face challenges in attending in‑person appointments, including individuals with limited mobility, caring responsibilities, or time constraints.”
