New Haddington fence vandalised
Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Marie Sharp
Fencing separating a new footpath from a local football ground has been vandalised within a day of its official opening.
East Lothian Council hit out at the ‘mindless vandalism’ which was carried out just hours after the completed metal fence was opened to the public.
Part-funded through Walking Scotland with a financial contribution from the council, up to £200,000 was spent creating the path which runs alongside Haddington Athletic FC’s Millfield ground and neighbouring sports pitches with a crossing point outside Haddington Care Home, linking it to an existing footpath.
The metal fence suffered denting and scraping after it appeared it was struck with a heavy object within hours of opening.
An East Lothian Council spokesperson said: “This mindless vandalism is extremely disappointing. It was discovered on Friday, June 20, when the path had only been open for a single day.
“The path was delivered by the council to provide a safer route for school pupils along with other members of the community. We would encourage anyone with information on those responsible for this selfish behaviour to contact police.”
The off-road path on the eastern side of Tynebank Road connects Mill Wynd to Meadowpark.
It has created a safer route, in particular for pupils travelling to and from school and for care home residents while offering improved access for those who walk, wheel or cycle.
