Hawick Market Store
Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Paul Kelly
A hot food takeaway will soon be on the menu within a new and ever-expanding convenience store in Hawick.
Scottish Borders Council planners have endorsed a bid for a certificate of lawfulness from the Hawick Market store, located at a former post office at 7 Sandbed.
The premises is in a row of terraced retail units, with residential properties on the upper floors of the building.
The store retails in food and non-food items, household goods and other ancillary services.
There is also a local delivery service of foodstuffs with approval recently granted by SBC’s Licensing Board to sell alcohol on an off-sale basis only.
A report approving the latest application, from SBC planning officer Stuart Small, states: “The current owners wish to incorporate a hot food takeaway offering and the works involve the formation of a small kitchen and cooking area at the rear of the shop.
“The area of floorspace dedicated to the new hot food takeaway offering in this case would only be a small percentage of the overall shop.
“It would also be sited towards the rear where its impact on the use’s character would be subordinate, and the activity associated with it could be speculated not to be notably greater than for the primary use.
“Therefore, given that it would be ancillary to the overall Class 1a use, no material change of use would occur and the proposal would not comprise development requiring planning permission.”
