Midlothian Council has today, Tuesday 29 August, appointed Councillor Kelly Parry as the new Elected Member Equality Champion.
The role of the Equality Champion is to demonstrate support for equality and diversity matters and initiatives within the organisation.
All elected members have an important role in championing equality within councils, as well as a scrutiny role to ensure that equality considerations are included in the decision making and governance of the council. However, the Equalities Champion will take responsibility for attending equality related community events; acting as an elected member spokesperson for equality related issues as required; promoting equality issues within the council and external community; and attending the Midlothian Peoples Equality Group (MPEG) meetings.
Newly appointed Elected Member Equalities Champion Cllr Parry said: “It is my privilege to serve as the new Equality Champion for Midlothian Council. As an important local employer, it is imperative that the council is fulfilling its commitment to furthering equal opportunities and valuing diversity. It will be my pleasure to help embed equality issues in all aspects of the council’s work and to do my part in helping to promote equality and diversity within the wider community.”
