Go-ahead is being sought for a new temporary Network Rail compound at Tweedbank.
The site, on land west of Peri Dent Ltd on the Tweedbank Industrial Estate, would house construction materials and welfare facilities while work is carried out to erect overhead line equipment.
An application has been submitted to Scottish Borders Council to use the site, which incorporates vacant land and a car park, until March 2027.
The work is required as part of Scottish Government’s rolling programme of decarbonisation of the railways that will bring significant economic, social and environmental benefits.
A report with the application states: “Only parts of the Borders Railway are being electrified, a northern area and a southern area.
“This is because battery electric trains will be utilised on this route, and these can run on both electrified and non-electrified track.
“The proposed temporary compound is required in order to facilitate the erection of overhead line equipment on the southern part of the route, from south of Bowshank Tunnel to Tweedbank Station.
“The site will be utilised primarily for the delivery and lay-down of materials, as well as staff welfare and parking facilities.”
The site is currently vacant land having previously been occupied by buildings which were demolished several years ago.
Part of the site is currently used as a car park and this will be incorporated into the temporary compound.
The report adds: “There will be HGV movements to and from the site although the schedule of these will vary. At some times there will be multiple deliveries per day Monday to Friday.
“Materials will be stored on site then moved across to the road rail access point at Tweedbank Station, to be carried to their intended location along the railway.”
