Work has begun to create a new path beside North Berwick Law providing a safer route to school for pupils.

East Lothian Council are upgrading the uneven dirt track connecting Haddington Road to Glenburn Road with an asphalt replacement.

The project, which has been spearheaded by Law Primary School Parent Council, got underway following extensive engagement and consultation with the community and stakeholder groups.

The path will connect the east and west of the town and create a more inclusive and attractive route to Law Primary School, Lochbridge Road Play Area, and North Berwick Sports Centre. It will also provide a link between the school and residential areas, the Recreation Park, and the new pump track.

Funding for the Law Path is being provided by a range of sources, including Walking Scotland, The North Berwick Trust, the North Berwick Area Partnership, and East Lothian Council.

Work on the path started last week and is scheduled to take around six weeks to complete. A new crossing point on Haddington Road at the entrance to Law Primary School will follow in the new year.

Councillor John McMillan, the council’s Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment, Economic Development and Tourism, said:

“We’re grateful to the organisations which have worked with us to help bring this wonderful project to fruition. This is an excellent example of the community engaging with the council to find the best solution to meet their needs. I particularly want to thank the Law Primary School Parent Council for their hard work and collaboration and the various local groups who provided funding to ensure the delivery of this path.

“Pupils, parents, carers, wheelchair users, and people with buggies will soon have the option of a safe and accessible route to school which allows them to avoid busy Lochbridge Road.”

A spokesperson for the Law Primary School Parent Council said:

“It’s incredibly rewarding to see the Law Path becoming a reality. We’re so grateful to everyone who’s supported this project along the way, and it will make such a difference to daily life for local families.”
