Hibs-v-St-Mirren-Saturday-14th-Feb-2026

Hibernian eased the sting of their Edinburgh derby defeat with a composed 2–0 Scottish Premiership win over St Mirren at Easter Road, as winter signings Owen Elding and Ante Šuto both scored for the club.

There were visible gaps in the stands at kick -off, the midweek loss clearly still lingering among the home support. On the pitch, though, Hibs were intent on providing a response.

They should have been ahead long before they eventually took the lead. Much of their early threat came down the left, where Jack Iredale’s delivery found Dane Scarlett, whose header was well held by Shamal George. A clever quick free-kick then released Elding through on goal, but the striker miscontrolled at the crucial moment with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Moments later, Rocky Bushiri somehow failed to connect from six yards when the ball dropped invitingly at his feet.

St Mirren had a brief scare of their own when Jake Young slipped into the box and forced Raphael Sallinger into a save – though the offside flag was already raised.

The opener finally came in the 43rd minute, and it was worth the wait. A short corner routine caught the visitors off guard before the cross was whipped to the near post, where Elding glanced a composed header beyond George. On his first start, it was a confident finish and a timely one.

Hibs led at the break, but the contest was not entirely comfortable. Miguel Chaiwa’s loose pass early in the second half presented Mikael Mandron with an opportunity, only for Sallinger to tip his effort over the bar.

Stephen Robinson made changes at half-time, introducing Roland Idowu and Mandron, but St Mirren struggled to create sustained pressure.

Hibs, meanwhile, continued to look most dangerous when Nicky Cadden was involved. The wing-back’s energy and delivery was integral to the team, and the hosts have clearly missed him while he has been unavailable.

With 10 minutes remaining, Cadden provided the decisive moment. Skipping past Conor McMenamin, he drilled a low ball across goal. George failed to deal with it and Šuto reacted quickest, flicking home from close range to seal the points.

It was a professional response from David Gray’s side, and one that highlights the early promise of his January recruitment. Hibs maintain pressure on Motherwell in the table and steady themselves after a difficult week.

For St Mirren, the outlook is less reassuring. Back -to-back defeats leave them 10th in the standings, and Stephen Robinson’s warning that his side are in a relegation battle is beginning to feel increasingly significant.
