Five state-of-the-art Bigbelly bins have been installed in North Berwick in the aim of helping ‘keep the town looking its best’.

The bins costing a total of £20,000 were funded by the North Berwick In Bloom (NBIB) group in a collaborative effort with East Lothian Council.

NBIB consulted with the council over the use of their funds and together brought the project to a successful conclusion.

The smart bins are solar powered and send an email to council staff when they are full and need emptied.

As their compactors are built in, they can so hold up to three times the capacity of standard bins to reduce litter overflow and are also seagull proof.

Eamon John, the council’s Head of Communities & Partnerships, said:

“We are very grateful to North Berwick In Bloom for their kind donation. The group asked us how they could make the most effective contribution to the community, and this was a great example of partnership working. These bins use the latest technology to help keep the local area tidy and are an excellent addition to the town.”

A spokesperson for North Berwick In Bloom said: “NBIB are delighted to have worked closely with East Lothian Council’s Amenity Services team to enable the purchase of five new Bigbelly bins for the Lodge and town centre.

“We are very proud that one of our volunteers, Richard Evans, has designed and painted the bins with flowers, birds and butterflies, and we hope they will be well used and help to keep the town looking beautiful. We would like to thank Johnn Stevens and his team in Amenity Services for managing the project.”
