Smart Meter Initiative

Colin Beattie, MSP for Midlothian North and Musselburgh, today welcomed the roll-out of a new smart meter initiative by Smart Energy GB. The roll-out of this new technology is an essential upgrade to energy infrastructure. Between now and 2020 every household across Scotland, England and Wales will be given the chance to upgrade to a smart meter with no additional cost, transforming the way we all buy gas and electricity.

The new meters bring many important benefits to consumers including the ability to see what they are spending on gas and electricity in real time and in pounds and pence. This information makes it possible for households to manage their energy use and have confidence in the accuracy of their bills. In this future, this information will make it easier for consumers to switch supplier and find the best energy deal.

Commenting, Mr Beattie said:

“I am excited to welcome the new smart meter initiative as I feel it will be a great boon to the constituents of Midlothian and East Lothian. I have no doubt that people have struggled with energy bills in the past and any steps that can be taken in helping them to manage their energy bills are appreciated.

I’m certain the Smart Energy GB’s smart meter will provide greater ease and accuracy in managing energy use. I would encourage all constituents to look into smart meters and be in contact with their energy suppliers to see when they can obtain one of these novel devices.”
