Nothing is more inconvenient than realising you’ve run out of your essential medicines just as GP surgeries and pharmacies close for the festive break.
December’s rush and excitement often cause people to overlook their repeat prescriptions, which leads to unnecessary anxiety and disruption over the holidays.
NHS 24 have urged everyone to check their supplies now and ensure they have enough prescribed medicines to last through the Christmas and New Year closures.
Dr John McAnaw, Head of Pharmacy and Associate Clinical Director at NHS 24, says:
“Each holiday season, thousands of patients call NHS 24’s 111 service because they have run out of prescribed medicines. We urge you to act now: check what you have, order only what you need, and collect your medicines in plenty of time before GP practices and pharmacies close for the holidays.
“Review your medicines and submit any repeat requests today. By doing this, you can relax, knowing you are fully covered and won’t need to scramble for help at the last minute.”
Many community pharmacies can advise and, in some cases, supply certain medicines for minor conditions. If your GP or pharmacy is closed, use the Accessing Medicines guide on NHS inform to find the most appropriate place to source both prescribed and non-prescribed medicines.
In addition to their advice about prescribed medicines, NHS 24 also recommends keeping a small supply of over-the-counter essentials at home. This could include pain relief, antihistamines, anti-diarrhoeal medication, oral rehydration sachets, indigestion remedies, mild laxatives, a thermometer, children’s medicines, and basic first-aid items.
Dr McAnaw continues:
“Keep a small supply of over-the-counter medicines and first-aid items close to hand, so you can quickly and safely treat minor illnesses and injuries at home if necessary. Always read the label and consult your pharmacist if you have questions, especially for children or if you take regular medicines.
“Put medicines at the top of your Christmas ‘to-do’ list. Review your medicines today to help you stay healthy and relaxed throughout the festive break.”
