As people across Scotland prepare for the festive break, NHS 24 is encouraging everyone to take a few simple steps to stay well over the holidays.
With winter illnesses circulating, and health and care services in Scotland expecting to be busy, NHS 24’s dedicated staff are sharing their advice to help the public enjoy a healthy and stress‑free Christmas.
One of those offering guidance is Nicola Paterson, Head of Centre at NHS 24’s Cardonald Contact Centre. From Blantyre, Nicola has worked with NHS 24 for an incredible 23 years, many of them spent supporting the service during the festive period.
This year, Nicola is scheduled to work both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day – but she’s still managing to fit in some family time.
“I’ll be welcoming my mum over for Christmas dinner before heading out to celebrate with the rest of my family later on,” she says. “Like so many of my colleagues, we balance our own festive traditions with the privilege of being here for the people of Scotland when they need us.”
Nicola’s main message for the public is simple: a little preparation goes a long way.
“Before the holidays start, check that you have enough of your prescribed medication to last you right through the festive period,” she explains. “It’s also a good idea to keep some basic over‑the‑counter medicines at home. Things like painkillers, cold and flu remedies, and treatments for upset stomachs can be really helpful if any of those winter bugs make an appearance.”
With the 111 service expected to experience high demand, Nicola is keen to reassure people that NHS 24 teams are working hard behind the scenes.
“We know 111 will be particularly busy over Christmas and New Year, and I want people to know that my colleagues and I are working as quickly and safely as we can to support everyone who needs us. Please be patient – we will be there to help.”
For minor illnesses and everyday health concerns, Nicola recommends making NHS inform the first stop.
“For common colds, flu, and sickness bugs NHS inform has so much of the same advice we give over the phone,” she says. “The symptom checkers are especially useful – they guide you through what to do next and can save you time if it’s something you can manage at home.”
As the festive season approaches, Nicola says she remains proud to serve the people of Scotland.
“It’s a privilege to do this job, especially at this time of year. On behalf of everyone at NHS 24, I’d like to wish you all a very merry Christmas.”
