Eyemouth Primary School

Scottish Borders Council faces strong opposition over plans to transfer pupils from Eyemouth Primary School into the town’s high school, it emerged at jam-packed public meetings this week.

Hundreds were in attendance at gatherings at the high school and the town’s community centre on Thursday, November 12.

A majority in attendance expressed opposition to an internal refurbishment of a proportion of the existing high school building to accommodate a new self-contained two-stream primary school with its own separate entrance.

This proposal would also see the construction of a new STEM and innovation building, enhancing facilities for secondary school pupils and ensuring that occupancy and utilisation of the existing building can be fully optimised whilst supporting a smoother transition from primary to secondary school.

As part of the project a separate new build early years and family centre would also be developed at the current primary school site on Coldingham Road – adjacent to the new destination play park and skate park which is planned for delivery during 2025/26.

The council say this would significantly enhance educational facilities available within Eyemouth.

But Councillor James Anderson, Independent for East Berwickshire, said that view was not shared by the majority who attended the meetings.

He said: “I spent the day at both consultations and I spoke to people going in at the community centre and as people were going in they still thought they were getting a primary built at the back of the school.

“When they were coming out they obviously realised the kids were getting put into the high school and there was no extra primary school building at all, they were just being moved, and that really angered them and I have yet to speak to a single person that agrees with what’s being planned, and that’s hundreds of people.

“One parent made a really good point – have they looked at doing what they did at Duns and refurb the building that currently exists, that might be a more affordable option.

“I’m hoping the council officers have taken away some of the suggestions given and will come back with something that’s better for everybody, because what’s in that consultation is not what anybody wants.”

Statutory consultation over the plans – https://scotborders.citizenspace.com/regulatory-services/statutory-eyemouth-2025/ – continue until December 8.
