Midlothian Council has formally approved plans to introduce decriminalised parking in the county.
The Council will now seek to implement the scheme in April 2018, should powers be granted by the Scottish Government in the New Year.
Councillors were updated on work done so far to introduce the scheme at this week’s full council meeting including on street sign and road markings being refreshed as well as the surveying and mapping of a number of Traffic Regulations Orders.
Decriminalised parking, which makes parking offences a civil matter rather than a criminal one, will see the introduction of ‘Edinburgh style’ parking attendants to manage parking problems, for example, all double yellow lines, around schools and at junctions.
Council also approved publication of the ‘Midlothian Parking Strategy’.
Councillor John Hackett, Cabinet Member for Commercial Operations, said:
“I am pleased to see the introduction of decriminalised parking move a step closer with the publication of the ‘Midlothian Parking Strategy’. Decriminalised parking will help reduce inconsiderate parking across Midlothian, ensuring people can safely access important amenities such as schools, shops and health centres.
“By improving congestion through parking restrictions and enforcement, decriminalised parking will also help play a role in regenerating our town centres.”
