Parking meter on North Berwick High Street

The firm which manufactured the parking meters vandalised in North Berwick has described the scale of the damage as “completely unprecedented”.

The machines were attacked soon after being installed earlier this month ahead of the introduction of parking charges in the town centre. East Lothian Council are in the process of arranging repairs to the equipment which is manufactured by IPS.

An IPS spokesperson said: “As a parking equipment supplier we have experience of commissioning thousands of parking meters across the whole UK over a number of years.

“We have never seen the sheer volume and extent of the vandalism which has taken place in North Berwick. For a project of this type, it is completely unprecedented and totally extraordinary.”

A council spokesperson said: “IPS engineers have been carrying out repairs on the vandalised meters and the estimated cost of the damage now exceeds £38,000.

“Unfortunately, the expense of repairing or replacing damaged units will need to come from existing budgets and would otherwise have been spent on providing vital public services.

“This vandalism will not prevent the implementation of better parking management measures in North Berwick. While we understand the views of people who are opposed to the introduction of parking charges, these actions have only increased costs and reduced the positive impacts that the income could deliver.

“We would encourage anyone with information regarding the vandalism to contact Police Scotland on 101.”
