Dalkeith Pétanque Club held a fundraising melee against rivals Newtongrange Pétanque Club to raise funds for a local Newtongrange team of 8 who won the right to represent Scotland in the European Cup for Clubs in Sin le Noble, Northern France.
Hosting the fundraiser at the Dalkeith Community Piste on Sunday, the 18 game melee raised £270 for the Newtongrange team of 8 with the overall win going to Newtongrnage Pétanque Club who won 10 games to 8.
With all proceeds of the event going to the Scottish representatives, there were contributions from pétanque clubs from Dunbar, East Lothian, Invelieth, winners Newtongrange and hosts Dalkeith Petanque Club.
Becoming one of the best clubs in Scotland, the team of 8 players from Newtongrange head out to France tomorrow to represent Scotland against the best Pétanque teams in Europe.
After the melee, Newtongrange Pétanque Club said:
“A great day out, thanks to Sandy [Chair of Dalkeith Pétanque] and his colleagues for the support they have shown us in the run up to this week’s Eurocup adventure.”
Despite only running for three years, the Newtongrange side’s adventure into Europe is a significant milestone that is celebrated by both themselves and Dalkeith Pétanque Club with their qualifiers being an extremely tough set of matches against Scotland’s best teams.
Alongside winning the league last year, one of the club’s players won the Midlothian Singles Championship.
Talking on the melee and Newtongrange’s success, Chair of Dalkeith Pétanque Club Sandy Howden said:
“It was brilliant being able to help out our friends in Newtongrange in their latest brilliant adventure. The members of Dalkeith PC were buzzing after the most exciting day playing the best in the region. The day at Dalkeith Community Piste was a great success.
“A great experience for Dalkeith PC to pit their wits against Newtongrange PC and the club did themselves and Dalkeith proud in their efforts.”
Charging players £3 and spectators £1, the melee consisted of 6 treble games, 6 double games and the last being 6 single games being played by 6 of the 8 players heading to the France competition.
Sandy added: “The singles games are top dog and we finished with a Dalkeith select playing 6 Nitten/Scotland players that really made our members happy. We more than held our own.”
With the 6 singles games ending 3-3, it was a very notable result for the Dalkeith side against who are becoming one of the best clubs in Scotland.
